2020 Nor'easter Bowl

Local High Schools Compete at Nor’Easter Bowl to Secure Spot at National Ocean Science Bowl Finals

Students to compete in regional stage of the 23rd Annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl

(Durham, New Hampshire) – On February 1, students around the Northeast will be putting their ocean science knowledge to the test by competing in the 2020 Nor’easter Bowl. Eighteen teams of students from eleven schools in Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, will face off in the Northeast regional component of the 23rd annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). An interdisciplinary ocean science education program of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, NOSB is a quiz-bowl style academic competition that tests students’ knowledge of ocean-related topics, which include cross-disciplines of biology, chemistry, policy, physics, and geology. The goal of the NOSB competition is to support and expand ocean sciences education and enhance public understanding and stewardship of the oceans.

Hosted this year at the University of New Hampshire, the Nor’easter Bowl will take place on Saturday, February 1 in Hamilton Smith Hall at 8:30 a.m. when the round robin starts, continuing throughout the day until the awards ceremony at 6 p.m.

Students in the Nor’easter Bowl aren’t the only ones testing their ocean science knowledge this month – around the nation, young scholars will be competing in 23 other bowls. The winner of each regional bowl will compete in the National Finals taking place April 16-19, 2020 in Long Beach, Mississippi.

The competition theme for the 2020 National Finals is “Understanding Human, Economic, and Environmental Resiliency in the Gulf of Mexico” as the Finals will coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Focusing on the environment in the backyard of where the finals will be hosted, this theme ties together society’s interactions with the ocean, how environmental systems may be changing, and the science of restoration and recovery.
