During a ceremony on June 7th at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, Maine, the Gulf of Maine Council presented international awards to honor individuals and organizations that have made a significant difference in protecting the health and sustainability of the Gulf of Maine watershed. 

“We are very pleased to honor 15 incredible award winners from Canada and the United States.  Their volunteer and professional efforts have supported the Gulf of Maine Council binational collaboration to protect the unique habitat, marine life, and economic resources of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem,” said Council Chair Perry Haines of New Brunswick.

GULFWIDE AWARDS

Three individuals, one community, and two industry leaders received gulfwide awards for the far reaching impact of their contributions on the health of the Gulf of Maine. 

  • Cliff Sinnott of New Hampshire received the Susan Snow-Cotter Leadership Award for outstanding leadership as a coastal management professional within the Gulf of Maine.  
  • Mike and Terry Stockdale of New Hampshire received the Longard Award for outstanding volunteer contributions toward protecting and conserving natural resources within the Gulf of Maine. 
  • The Town of Exeter, New Hampshire, received the Sustainable Communities Award for exemplary work in achieving sustainable outcomes related to the environment and economy within the Gulf of Maine. 
  • The Inn by the Sea in Maine and New Hampshire Community Seafood in New Hampshire both received Sustainable Industry Awards for outstanding innovation and leadership in achieving sustainable business practices and conserving natural resources within the Gulf of Maine.

VISIONARY AWARDS

In 2017, the Gulf of Maine Council honored seven individuals and one organization with Visionary Awards in recognition of their outstanding innovation, creativity, and commitment to protecting natural resources within the Gulf of Maine.

  • Sally Soule, NH Department of Environmental Services, New Hampshire
  • Wendy Lull, former President of Seacoast Science Center, New Hampshire
  • Alex Abbott, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Maine
  • Josh Royte, The Nature Conservancy, Maine
  • Betsy Smith, Volunteer, Maine
  • Dr. Myriam Barbeau, University of New Brunswick, New Brunswick

 

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Gulf of Maine Council also presented a Distinguished Service Award to Cynthia Krum, Executive Director of the Gulf of Maine Association, for exceptional service and contributions to the Gulf of Maine Council over the past several years.
