Carlsen worked at NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service in the International Fisheries Division (now called the Office of International Affairs), which is responsible for the conservation and management of transboundary living marine resources (i.e., fish and marine mammals) through participation in negotiations of international agreements. She worked on the World Summit for Sustainable Development and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

Current Position: 

After her fellowship, Carlsen was hired by the same office and continued her work on ICCAT issues.
