Abstract: 

This project is dedicated to the investigation of alternative solutions to the recovery of oil spills. The development, design and testing of an oil recovery system for use by vessels of opportunity is addressed in this work. ORS is intended for use by advancing vessels at speeds where the use of conventional systems is impractical. Use of high velocity barrier technology was implemented as the basis and background for this research. Initial testing of an existing high velocity boom yielded the direction necessary for the design of ORS. Testing of a final system under simulated conditions showed the flexibility and simplicity in deploying such a system. Results also proved that this is an effective option for vessels of opportunity.
